Happy Anniversary, WarGames! Pop Culture Movie Favorite Turns 31

“Shall we play a game?”  This weekend marks the 31st anniversary of WarGames (rent it on iTunes), one of pop culture’s favorite movies.  Debuted in theaters on June 3, 1983, WarGames stars Matthew Broderick (The ProducersDeck The HallsWonderful World), Dabney Coleman (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) and Ally Sheedy (Welcome To The RileysThe Breakfast Club).  Released by Lakeshore Records, Wonderful World (rent it on iTunes) is scored by Craig Richey and Welcome to the Rileys is scored by Marc Streitenfeld.

Directed by John Badham (The CW’s Supernatural), WarGames hypothesized what would happen if a teen wiz kid could accidentally hack into the ultimate video game.  He soon realize that his online war game might actually be real.  The film was made during the Cold War, when the thought of a Soviet threat was a looming dread for many.

Throwback Thursday: Vanessa Hudgens Is The Beauty In ‘Beastly’ | Watch The Music Video

In the spirit of Throwback Thursday, Lakeshore Records selects Beastly (rent it on Netflix), a film starring Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) as the vain “Kyle Kingson,” Vanessa Hudgens (High School MusicalSucker Punch) as the quiet and kind “Lindy,” Mary-Kate Olsen (New York MinuteFull House) as “Kendra” the witch who casts the spell on Kyle, and Neil Patrick Harris (Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, Hedwig and the Angry Inch) as “Will” the blind tutor.  The Beastly score album, with music by Marcelo Zarvos, and the Beastly (Songs From The Motion Picture), are released by Lakeshore Records.  Featured on the album include music by Raney Shockne, The Vines, and Kristina & The Dolls.  Watch the music video featuring Kristina & The Dolls at the jump.

Now On Netflix: ‘Penelope’ Starring Christina Ricci & Two X-Men Stars | Soundtrack Score By Joby Talbot

Continuing on our scifi and fantasy film kick this week, we bring you Penelope (watch it on Netflix), a fairy tale movie which stars Christina Ricci (Buffalo ’66) as the title character, “Penelope,” and two X-Men: Days of Future Past stars: James McAvoy (Wanted) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).  The soundtrack, released by Lakeshore Records, comes with a score by Composer Joby Talbot (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).

Penelope is a modern day fairy tale about an aristocratic girl who is born cursed with a facial disfigurement in the form of a pig’s snout.  Only through the unconditional love of a man can the curse be lifted.  Watch this interview with Composer Joby Talbot, as he explains how he expressed the various character’s personalities (wicked, comical) and what Penelope sees for the first time (excitement, wonder), when she, isolated all her life, finally gets to experience the outside world freely.

Minnesota Public Radio Interviews Composer Brian Reitzell On ‘Hannibal’

“His skills have been enlisted by a number of modern storytellers — including filmmaker Sofia Coppola, with whom Reitzell has worked as music supervisor and composer on a number of acclaimed films. “Whedon didn’t just write “In Your Eyes,” he also provided a song for the soundtrack.  The song, “Crumblin’” is performed by Noah Maffit and Jessica Freedman, and marks the first time Whedon has penned music for the screen since ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in 2012.” -MTV News

In Your Eyes is the new Joss Whedon film directed by Brin Hill.  This paranormal romance movie starring Zoe Kazan, Michael Stahl-David, Nikki Reed, Mark Feuerstein, Jennifer Grey and Steve Howey, debuted on Vimeo a month ago.  What you’ll fall in love with, besides the charming story, is the soundtrack which, besides Whedon’s catchy tune, features beautiful score work by Composer Tony Morales.
