Lakeshore Records will release the score album to the critically-acclaimed film, Dear White People, directed by Justin Simien.  Scored by Kathryn Bostic (Middle of Nowhere, I Will Follow), the movie is now playing nationwide (check show times).  In describing her score, Bostic said, “We hear classical, hip hop, electronic, jazz, etc. and it all makes sense and really serves the storytelling.  I got to play around with many different textures alongside orchestral instrumentation.  And of course, as a pianist I loved being able to add this to the score particularly in the ‘love theme’ I created.”  Dear White People (Original Motion Picture Score) is available on iTunes on November 18.  Stay tuned for the download link!

Documentarian Margaret Brown’s new film depicts the response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and resultant oil spill from multiple viewpoints.  On April 20, 2010, communities throughout the Gulf Coast of the United States were devastated by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, a state-of-the-art, offshore oilrig operated by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. The blast killed 11 of 126 rig crewmembers and injured many more, setting off a fireball that was seen 35 miles away. After burning for two days, the Deepwater Horizon sank, causing the largest offshore oil spill in American history.

‘White Bird In A Blizzard’ Claims A Spot In ‘Best Soundtrack Moments Of October’ Roundup | Stereogum

Stereogum has named director Gregg Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard in its roundup of Best Soundtrack Moments of October, planted firmly in the #2 slot.

Well, this is another one of those ’80s-set shoe-ins where there’s just no way I was going to be able to help myself. The score to White Bird In A Blizzard was handled by Robin Guthrie, the guitarist of Cocteau Twins, AKA the man responsible for some of the most ethereal and beautiful guitar work out there. The opening credits are set to Cocteau Twins’ “Sea, Swallow Me,” and through the various dream sequences and flashbacks, there’s always Guthrie’s guitar, reliably doing what it’s always been so effective at: putting all those strange and ineffable elements of human experience and memory into an actual sound. -Read the full story at Stereogum.

Starring Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Shiloh Fernandez and Christopher Meloni, White Bird In A Blizzard takes place in the ’80s and early part of the ’90s, featuring a period-correct soundtrack.  Lakeshore Records released two soundtracks: White Bird In A Blizzard Music By Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd, and White Bird In A Blizzard – Songs From The Film, featuring popular hits from the ’80s and ’90s.  Preview the albums below!
