Mandy has been playing festivals from Sundance to Cannes with rave reviews and much love for the score by the late, beloved composer Jóhann Jóhannsson who has left us far to soon.
The Panos Cosmatos’ action-thriller is set for release later this year by RLJE Films. The film stars Nicolas Cage and Andrea Riseborough.
“The late Jóhann Jóhannsson’s epic-sounding, metal-tinged score make Mandy feel as if it’s taking place outside of time, dwelling in its own nightmarish realm in which frightening supernatural creatures coexist with their human counterparts.” – ScreenDaily.com
It also features the final completed score by the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannson, which drifts between sighing, swelling synths and apocalyptic thunder-crashes of electric guitar. It is outstanding – arguably the film’s very soul – though you wouldn’t want to listen before bed. – Telegraph.co.uk
The late Jóhann Jóhannsson’s synthesiser-heavy score and Benjamin Loeb’s colour-saturated cinematography delivers the promise of every great painted 1980s VHS box cover. – The Guardian.com
RLJE Films has acquired all U.S. rights to the Nicolas Cage-starring action-thriller Mandy, and that the company plans to release the already semi-notorious film this summer. Written and directed by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow), Mandy stars Cage and Andrea Riseborough as a couple whose existence is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand.
The grainy 16mm imagery, a vibrant mixture of neon hues and shadows set to Johan Johansson’s disorienting score, suggests a gothic fantasy unfolding within the confines of a heavy-metal poster. – Eric Kohn, IndieWire
With descriptors such as “psychedelic” and “Batshit Insane” for Panos Cosmos’ Mandy film, all we can say is that we’re all in for this new Nicolas Cage cinematic thrill ride! Mandy just held its worldwide theatrical premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, so we’re certain to hear more. See the full review now at IndieWire. Stay tuned for more details on the soundtrack featuring score by Academy Award®-nominated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson!
“New York F***** City,” from Simonsen’s soundtrack, embraces a retro, dark synths vibe that would be equally at home scoring a high-speed chase or a euphoric night on a nightclub’s dance floor.” – Under The Radar
NERVE seems fairly dark and nearly apocalyptic, and thus far most of its soundtrack has reflected that. However, Rob Simonsen‘s “Night Drive” is a more positive bit of synthwave, a major-key piece straight out of a whimsical SNES racer. – Popmatters
