Stevenson, a classically trained and renowned double bassist delivers a score which follows the inner struggle and emotional journey of Robyn Davidson, a young woman who defied convention in 1977 to embark on a 1,700-mile personal odyssey across the Australia Outback (from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean).

Tracks, the film, is based on the inspiring real life adventure of Robyn Davidson (played by Mia Wasikowska) who traversed across the Australian Outback in 1977, over 1,700 miles (from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean) on a personal trek. Much of the journey was documented by National Geographic Photographer Rick Smolan (played by Adam Driver), who discovered her while on assignment. The resulting photographs and Davidson’s subsequent memoir became a worldwide sensation, and forms the basis of the film.

To the minor extent that Vincent Gallo’s directorial debut has a plot, it involves his character, Billy, seeking revenge on the Buffalo Bills placekicker whose missed field-goal attempt ostensibly ruined Billy’s life. Near the end of the film, Billy finally shows up at the strip club owned by the retired player, gun in hand. Rather than accompany this surreally staged, grotesquely violent scene with music that might actually be heard in a strip club, or even music that would conventionally heighten the intensity of a shootout, Gallo chooses—yes!—Yes. Not only does the track’s sinuous groove provide plenty of offbeat tension as Billy walks in, it thrillingly shifts into high gear at the precise moment that he spots his victim. Macy’s directorial debut, Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son. Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father yearning to reconnect with his son. He begins to explore his son’s unknown talent, obsessively learning his songs, until one day he decides to play one of them at a local bar. The song captivates Quentin, a young musician (Anton Yelchin) in the audience, and the two unlikely friends decide to form a rock ‘n’ roll band called Rudderless that becomes surprisingly popular and revitalizes both of their lives.

Kite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Available Tomorrow, Music By Paul Hepker

Tour Diary: John Velghe And His New Hearts Motorcycle Club Roadshow, Plus Music Video Debut!

Lakeshore Records recording artist John Velghe has embarked on the highway, traveling over 3000 miles by motorcycle and performing live music in support of a great cause. We asked him to send us updates on his tour. Here is his first update from the New Hearts Motorcycle Club Roadshow.

So here I am on a motorcycle, stopping for fuel twice as often compared to a van, and de-helmetting every hour or so just to get that weight off my head. Add a half-day of rain and a time zone change and I find myself barely making gigs in time. Traveling by motorcycle really magnifies one of the things I find most tedious about the touring band: the state of perpetual rock band tardiness!

I had a great night in Louisville playing at Open Gallery with a great local songwriter, Jacob Douglas and Kim Webber.

One of the things that occurred to me while listening to Jacob and Kim is how interesting it is that we still have regional songwriting dialects and lexicon in America. You wouldn’t know it by just listening to the radio and it’s hard to hear in that Great Homogenizer we call Modern Recording Technology; but with live music, regional upbringing really comes across. Not just dialect, but word choices and the stories that are told – not to mention the characters that populate those stories.

If you move around the country and play with people from different areas, you’ll notice this. It’s one of the things bigger acts miss when they choose to tour with the same act show after show. Songwriters who are comfortable in their own skin will show you their home in their songs. This is the thing Levon Helm brought to The Band. It’s the thing Steven Van Zandt and Springsteen discovered when they toured.

After just a couple of shows, this exposure to regionalism has been one of the best gifts of my tour. I’m looking forward to hearing more.
