The most pleasantly surprising element of Rudderless is its soundtrack. The songs, most of which are actually performed by the Rudderless band (Crudup, Yelchin, Ben Kweller, and Ryand Dean, and primarily written by Simon Steadman and Charlton Pettus) are melodious and endearing, both humorous and moving. Crudup and Yelchin prove talented musicians. – Under The Radar
Director William H. Macy’s directorial debut in Rudderless, is now available On Demand via Starz — watch it tonight on Starz Edge at 10:10 p.m. ET! Starring Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, Felicity Huffman, Selena Gomez and Laurence Fishburne, and rocker Ben Kweller (who made his acting debut), film critic Daniel Schweiger says, “Not since Prince’s end set of Purple Rain has a movie singer ripped his guts out to such powerful effect, if done here to understandably more lyrically strumming resonance for one of this year’s most powerfully moving film scenes.”
The critically-acclaimed Rudderless Soundtrack also features performances by the Rudderless Band (Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, Ben Kweller, Ryan Dean).

So good are Rudderless’ sets that one could easily imagine the band becoming the real deal, especially lead singer Cudrup, whose delivery of the emotionally climactic “Sing Along” makes one feel the ghost of John Lennon as much as it does his character’s son. Not since Prince’s end set of PURPLE RAIN has a movie singer ripped his guts out to such powerful effect, if done here to understandably more lyrically strumming resonance for one of this year’s most powerfully moving film scenes. -Daniel Schweiger, AssignmentX

So let it be known throughout the land: William H. Macy has balls of steel. In addition to juggling a busy, successful film and television career, he’s taken on a new role — filmmaker. His first feature film, “Rudderless”, is a poignant story that explores finding happiness in the midst of loss and pain. And you know what? It’s really damn good. –The Playlist
The highly anticipated soundtrack to Rudderless is available tomorrow on iTunes. In William H. Macy’s directorial debut, Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son. Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father yearning to reconnect with his son. He begins to explore his son’s unknown talent, obsessively learning his songs, until one day he decides to play one of them at a local bar. The song captivates Quentin, a young musician (Anton Yelchin) in the audience, and the two unlikely friends decide to form a rock ‘n’ roll band called Rudderless that becomes surprisingly popular and revitalizes both of their lives.
