Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai’s two-time Academy Award®-nominated The Grandmaster film is 10 years in the making, based loosely on the life of Ip Man, the man who trained another Martial Arts legend, Bruce Lee, the fundamentals of Wing Chun.  Acclaimed composers Nathaniel Méchaly and Shigeru Umebayashi score the visually-stunning multi-period drama, considered a romantic film with satisfying, dynamic fight scenes inspired by classic Kung Fu films.  The bold and sweeping music is the kind of score that was made for vinyl.  The film and score swept the film awards in Asia.  Preview the album below.

“Shigeru Umebayashi, who worked with Wong Kar Wai on IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE and 2045 is back with another lush score” Joblo.com
“Nathaniel Méchaly & Shigeru Umebayashi worked together to compose the wonderful musical accompaniment for The Grandmaster to great effect. Even though the film is visually impressive I’d say it’s more important to see it in a setting that places a premium on sound. Nathaniel and Shigeru’s tracks are the definition of epic with booming horns, resonating drums all mixed with period instruments to add an authentic feel to each setting.” Nerdluster.com
“Umebayashi Shigeru’s gorgeous score is another highlight, complemented by an array of songs and classical pieces ranging from 1950s Canto-pop ballads to Ennio Morricone’s theme from Once Upon A Time in America – a film that is evoked on numerous occasions throughout.” Twitchfilm.com
“Kar-Wai’s composers, Nathaniel Méchaly and Shigeru Umebayashi, deliver a lush (and Western-based) symphonic score very much in the mold of Maurice Jarre’s haunting themes for Lean’s film.” DavisEnterprises

The Grandmaster (NPR) Renowned Kung Fu Master Inspires Slew Of Action Flicks

Filmmaker Wong Kar Wai credits Ip Man’s generation for passing on the martial arts tradition despite upheaval in China. His latest film, The Grandmaster, which stars Tony Leung as Ip Man, is an action-packed meditation on Chinese martial arts philosophy that is intentionally old-fashioned.

“Today we see the Chinese went through rapid changes. It’s time for us to return to our roots and to revisit our heritage,” Wong says.

True to Wong’s signature art-house style, The Grandmaster is one lush sequence after another. In an early scene, a gleaming brothel serves as the battleground for Ip Man and his rivals. The film crisscrosses over decades between Hong Kong and mainland China.
