The Age Of Adaline: Rob Simonsen’s Score Is Perfection On The Film’s Opening Weekend

Critics Love Rob Simonsen’s Score On ‘The Age Of Adaline’ As Fans Turned Out In Droves

Not long after Adaline’s brief encounter with the young document forger, there’s a flashback to 1906, where the story really begins. This is when her charmed life starts unraveling. The back story is mostly transmitted through picture postcard imagery, her handsome engineer husband’s untimely death, the grief-stricken young widow skidding off the road in a freak snowstorm. Which requires another detour to mention the gently aged sensibility caught like lightning in a bottle by cinematographer David Lanzenberg and production designer Claude Pare. Rob Simonsen’s lyrical music accompanies all this beauty. –Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Over the weekend, movie fans turned out for The Age Of Adaline, starring Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker with Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn.  Rob Simonsen, founder of The Echo Society and composer of last year’s acclaimed Foxcatcher, scored “Adaline” and collaborated with Faux Fix (who, last year, collaborated with Son Lux on The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) and Elena Tonra (on vocals) for the end credits song, “Start Again.”  Released by Lakeshore Records, the score album is available now on iTunes.  The various artists album will be released by Lakeshore Records on April 28.  Preview the official The Age Of Adaline Playlist below.

The Age Of Adaline: An Interview With Composer Rob Simonsen | Film Music Magazine

Rob Simonsen-Scored Film ‘The Age Of Adaline’ Opens In Theaters Nationwide On April 24

Simonsen responds with a beautiful, longing score that proves to be his most sumptuously traditional work yet. Beyond-lush romantic strings, angelic voices, gossamer bells combine for a gloriously thematic tapestry that’s nothing less than heaven-sent music. It’s longing beauty as the height or irony for a woman who’d like nothing better than to once again be touched by the hand of age – anxious music conveying a constant navigation of identities to hide her true self.  -Daniel Schweiger, Film Music Magazine

Film music critic Daniel Schweiger recently interviewed Rob Simonsen, the composer of The Age Of Adaline.  The score album is out now via Lakeshore Records, and the film opens this Friday nationwide.  See below for more on the interview.

Exclusive Premiere! Age Of Adaline: Hear The ‘Start Again’ Lyric Video – Single Out Now, Score By Rob Simonsen Releases 4/21

It’s a lot of talent on one track, and the result is something stirring and beautiful, well befitting the film’s complicated themes of love and time. Pulsing synths lend an ethereal tone that is tethered gently by slow-drawn strings. Tonra’s voice rings clear and slightly sad as she entreats a lover, “Speak slowly/ Savor every word/ So we won’t forget that time/ Won’t wait for no one.” She reaches new heights on the words of the title as triumphant drums beat upward in an arc of hope. –Consequence of Sound
