Brian Reitzell’s ‘Hannibal’ Score Is TV’s Most Unsettling Soundtrack | The New York Times

During a recent recording session at his studio here, Mr. Reitzell, 49, was holding a Newton’s cradle, the desk toy with the suspended clicking balls, just one of the dozens of objects turned music makers that he trotted out over the course of two hours. “This was my daughter’s, but I broke it in the process,” said Mr. Reitzell, a former drummer for the punk band Redd Kross. “I used it in Season 3. It made really interesting rhythms. It was like instant Aphex Twin.”  -The New York Times

Acclaimed composer Brian Reitzell recently spoke to The New York Times about his scoring work on the critically-acclaimed NBC series, Hannibal.  Now in Season 3, Brian reveals some of his unconventional instrumentation used and sounds made from household items which had been sampled, distorted and rendered nearly unrecognizable. “There is something unnerving about his ability to take household items and manipulate their sounds into something frightening.”  Read the full story at The New York Times.  If you haven’t had a chance to review Brian Reitzell’s score from Hannibal Season 1 and Season 2 released by Lakeshore Records, hear the official album previews below for a taste of “music for cannibals.”

Brian Reitzell’s Acclaimed Score For NBC’s Hannibal Among TV’s Best Scores | The Guardian

While soundtracks featuring pre-existing songs have flourished, original scores rarely made waves, but that is beginning to change thanks to shows like Hannibal, Fargo, The Leftovers, Luther and Sherlock. – Read the full story at The Guardian

The Guardian just published a feature on the emergence of television scores becoming integral to the shows — no longer thought of as merely background music.  And, composer Brian Reitzell’s score for Hannibal is among the best television scores, says The Guardian.  Brian Reitzell, who’s the music supervisor and composer for NBC’s Hannibal series (Season 1 and Season 2 soundtracks released by Lakeshore Records) says “Every second of Hannibal is a heightened reality. The musical atmosphere is part of the ambient background of the entire show. That’s why on average there is 40-plus minutes of music on Hannibal and the entire show is only 43 minutes. Sometimes there’s more music than visual!”  Head on over to The Guardian for the full story.
