Somehow Workman managed to gather together a virtual super-group of jazz and funk artists to perform his score, including bass legend Bootsy Collins, drummer Clyde Stubblefield and rhythm guitarist Catfish Collins. It’s nothing like a traditional score, instead playing more like a succession of rock-funk instrumentals, but in and of themselves, the pieces are great. – Jonathan Broxton, Movie Music UK
This week, we take a look at acclaimed coming-of-age film, Superbad starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen and Bill Hader, from the producers who brought you The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Talledega Nights! Directed by Greg Mottola (Daytrippers, Adventureland), the film earned 11 film awards and 24 nominations including the ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards’ “Top Box Office Films” win for Composer Lyle Workman (“Love” on Netflix, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Stand Up Guys, Yes Man), and two Critic’s Choice Award nominations for Best Comedy Movie and Best Young Actor for Michael Cera.
This classic comedy features a mix of Lyle Workman songs written for the film, performed by James Brown’s backing band with Bootsy Collins of Parliament, and killer tracks from The Roots, Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66, Rick James, The Bar-Keys and more. The soundtrack was released in 2007 on Lakeshore Records, available on digital, CD and vinyl.
This week, Lakeshore Records selects The Spiderwick Chronicles(watch it on iTunes), a film directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday). The film is scored by Academy Award-winning Composer James Horner (Chumscrubber). If Horner’s name sounds familiar to you, your hunch is correct: he is known for his film score work on films like Avatar, Titanic, Braveheart, and many more. Horner garnered the ASCAP Award for his score work on Spiderwick. The Spiderwick Chronicles (Original Motion Picture Score) features Horner’s sweeping orchestrals to match the film’s high adventures and battle scenes with fantastical creatures.
When the Grace family move into the Spiderwick estate, the children discover a fairy tale world waiting for them. The film stars Freddie Highmore (A&E’s Bates Motel), Sarah Bolger (The Tudors), Nick Nolte (Tropic Thunder, Peaceful Warrior), Mary-Louise Parker (Howl) and Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express).

Henry Jackman is the film composer for Captain America: Winter Soldier and Lakeshore Records‘ Monsters Vs. Aliens soundtrack, but his connection to heroes doesn’t end there: he has scored for The Dark Knight (Batman), Kick-Ass (aspiring comic book heroes), X-Men: First Class (mutant heroes), and Captain Phillips (Navy S.E,A.L.S.). With one listen, you’ll understand why he’s been the go-to guy for creating music that you expect to hear during moments of discovery, adventure and heroic sequences on an epic scale,
We’re big fans of Seth Rogen here from Superbad to Pineapple Express to his new film This Is The End (and let’s not forget James Franco!). The Pineapple Express Soundtrack album is a timeless summer classic to get your party started.
