War Machine Soundtrack: Nick Cave & Warren Ellis’ Highly-Anticipated Score To The Netflix Drama Debuts On All Digital Outlets!

War Machine: Score by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - out on Lakeshore Records

The theme, filled with looping atmospheric electronics, isn’t dissimilar from the music on The Skeleton Tree, the most recent Bad Seeds album–you almost expect to hear Cave start crooning halfway through. – Andy Cush, Spin Magazine

The film comes paired with a score by the always terrific duo Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. – Under The Radar

Lakeshore Records, together with Invada Records, are thrilled to release War Machine (Music From The Netflix Original Film), featuring score by acclaimed composing duo, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis!  The Brad Pitt film is directed by David Michôd, also making its debut today on Netflix!

“It is always helpful to be pushed into different worlds that are unique and unknown,” said composers Cave and Ellis.  “War Machine demanded a wholly different type of score than we had previously done. Together we made a score that was both light and dark, propulsive and meditative at the same time.  We developed a kind of ‘spiritual electronics’ that captured both the melancholy and the terrible absurdity of the Afghan war.  It was a great pleasure to work with David Michôd, who is not only an extraordinary filmmaker but a musician too.  Our favorite score!”

Plan B Entertainment presents WAR MACHINE, now streaming on Netflix.

The ambient instrumental kicks off with swirling analog synthesizers that harken back to the 1970s heyday of kraut-rock. From there, [“War Machine”] builds with marching snares and ringing bells, climaxing with a flurry of harmonized vocals. – Ryan Reed, Rolling Stone

In [the title track, “War Machine”], military snares set a sharp cadence beneath the song’s eerie, cresting synths. – Randall Coburn, Consequence of Sound

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (of the Bad Seeds and Grinderman) have a robust history of putting their music to film, and they’ve added to that repertoire with yet another film score. – Amanda Wicks, Pitchfork

Fresh off work on last year’s acclaimed “Hell or High Water,” the composing duo of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis — go-to cinematic scorers for such smart, dark fare as “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and “The Road” — lend their mood music to this satire inspired by the war in Afghanistan. Pitt plays a cocksure general, and Kingsley is President Hamid Karzai, in “Animal Kingdom” director David Michôd’s cheeky adaptation of Michael Hastings’s 2012 nonfiction bestseller, “The Operators.” – Michael O’Sullivan, Washington Post
