Throwback Thursday: The Lobster – Yorgos Lanthimos’ Academy Award® Nominated Film
On this edition of Throwback Thursday, we revisit one of our favorite film and soundtrack releases of 2016: the absurdist dystopian melodrama, Academy Award®-nominated The Lobster, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth), and starring Colin Farrell (who received a Golden Globe® nom for his role) and Rachel Weisz. The Lobster film was the No. 2 Movie on Esquire Magazine’s 25 Best Movies of 2016 year-end list! You might also note the soundtrack features a curated album of artists including a track by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue.
Beethoven, Shostakovich and Stravinsky all put in prominent appearances, but the most evocative selection here may well be Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue’s morbid country-Gothic ballad “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” with its plaintive plea for unrestrained love: “Do you know where the wild roses grow, so sweet and scarlet and free?” – Variety
Expect to hear more from Nick Cave: together with Warren Ellis, they are releasing their score to War Machine (Netflix) out May 26 and Wind River, out this summer, both on Lakeshore Records. If you haven’t listened to The Lobster (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), preview the album below.
