Greenland: David Buckley Releases His Score Via Music.Film and Varese Sarabande!

Greenland (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - David Buckley | Music.Film & Varese Sarabande

The darkly orchestrated soundscapes are underscored with electric guitars, processed organic instruments and an ethereally boys’ choir all of which accentuate the film’s themes of family, redemption and renewal.  – Dread Central

Music.Film Recordings has released Greenland—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring music by composer David Buckley (Unhinged, Papillon), in partnership with Varèse Sarabande Records. In his music, Buckley re-teaming with director Ric Roman Waugh on their second collaboration brings a decidedly human element to the action-packed disaster thriller.   Dread Central premiered the track, “Brave New World,” which you can listen to now.

In Greenland, a family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

Says Buckley: “After our previous collaboration, it was great to get back into the trenches with Ric for Greenland. While fully acknowledging the scope and scale of a disaster thriller, Ric was keen for me to concentrate on the human drama and the family bond that is so effectively illustrated in the film. Gerard Butler is not playing a super-human character here, but an everyman dealing with normal life, until life becomes very abnormal. Ric and I quickly hit on the idea of an electric guitar carrying his character’s theme – it felt grounded and real to us. To capture the awesome majesty of the comet’s destructiveness, I melded the lowest string sounds of detuned double basses with higher otherworldly sounds from processed organic instruments. And to give a sense of innocence lost, of hope and redemption, I utilized a boys choir which assert themselves most fully in the final act of the movie. Between these recurring musical identities, Ric and I hoped to convey the ideas of family, renewal and humanity throughout the score.”
