The emotive score by composer Khari Mateen is led by rich horn playing and backed by strings, keys and jazz-inflected drumming, succeeds in capturing the joys and challenges of an all-encompassing love affair. The MACRO film directed by Angel Kristi Williams and starring Kofi Siriboe, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing, Uzo Aduba, Mack Wilds, Naturi Naughton, Suzzanne Douglas, Jade Eshete with Blair Underwood and Michael Ealy.
“Khari Mateen’s profound jazz score, which probably owes some inspiration to Nicholas Britell’s work in the aforementioned ‘Beale Street,’ though its swooning horns, beautifully fills Isaiah and Stevie’s love to the brim.” (The Playlist)
Happy birthday, Ms. Naturi Naughton! This is quite a month for the star of Lakeshore Records’ Fame soundtrack! Just a few days ago, the original Oscar-winning Fame movie was in the news for celebrating its 34th anniversary, and now Naturi Naughton, one of the stars of the 2009 remake (get it on iTunes) is adding another candle to her birthday cake. Remember her name: 9 million-plus YouTube viewers can’t be wrong!
Also, don’t miss her in Lottery Ticket (rent it on iTunes), with co-star Bow Wow, and see her portray Lil’ Kim in Notorious (rent it on iTunes). This musically-talented Naturi can belt out a tune and electrify an audience, but don’t just read about it: see her perform as “Denise” in the following music videos!
Fame, the original 1980 film musical starring Debbie Allen, Gene Anthony Ray and Lee Curreri, portrayed the individual trials and tribulations of highly-gifted students who attended a performing arts high school in New York City. The film also spawned a long-running TV show (1982) and a stage musical. Lakeshore Records released a series of Fame soundtracks to the 2009 film remake (watch it on iTunes), which features a score album by Academy Award-nominated Composer Mark Isham (A River Runs Through It, Warrior), songs performed by Naturi Naughton (Lifetime’s The Client List) and a whole new generation of exceptionally talented performers.
Debbie Allen is the only cast member to appear in the original, TV and 2009 productions of Fame. The internal struggle to “make it” and fight through self doubt is as relevant now as it was back in 1980, and you’ll hear it in the music on Lakeshore Records‘ Fame albums.
