Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling. All of Phil’s romance, power and fragility is trapped in the past and in the land: He can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. He is a cowboy as raw as his hides.

The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant on their way to market, the brothers meet Rose, the widowed proprietress, and her impressionable son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly he drives them both to tears, reveling in their hurt and rousing his fellow cowhands to laughter – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose then returns to marry her.

As Phil swings between fury and cunning, his taunting of Rose takes an eerie form – he hovers at the edges of her vision, whistling a tune she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more overt, amplified by the cheering of Phil’s cowhand disciples. Then Phil appears to take the boy under his wing. Is this latest gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot twisting further into menace .

A See-Saw Films, Bad Girl Creek and Max Films production in association with Brightstar, The New Zealand Film Commission, Cross City Films and BBC Film, THE POWER OF THE DOG is produced by Jane Campion, Tanya Seghatchian, Emile Sherman, Iain Canning and Roger Frappier. The film will be released in select theaters November 17 before being released worldwide on Netflix December 1, 2021.

Slow West: John Maclean’s Acclaimed Western Opens In UK Cinemas, Soundtrack Out Now!

The Mess Hall Band’s Jed Kurzel Scores The Sounds Of The Old West In Sundance Film Festival Winning Buddy Western

John MacLean was once a member of the Beta Band, the great and influential and weirdly underrated Scottish group. He directed some of their videos, and after the group’s breakup, he became a filmmaker. His first movie is Slow West, the new indie Western with Michael Fassbender. The composer Jed Kurzel did most of the Slow West score, but MacLean got one contribution from a band who almost certainly carries some Beta Band influence, the London art-poppers Django Django. Their song “Slow West” is a driving acoustic-guitar instrumental… –Stereogum

Slow West (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is out now via Lakeshore Records.  The album features score by Jed Kurzel (The Babadook, Macbeth).  Jed is known for being the frontman of Australia’s award-winning The Mess Hall band.  In addition, songs by Werner, Bryan Michael Mills, and Django Django.  Preview the album below and see Slow West now playing in UK cinemas!

John Maclean’s Buddy Western Is Now On VOD, Own The Soundtrack Feat. Score By The Mess Hall’s Jed Kurzel

Perhaps it’s no huge surprise that one of the founding members of offbeat rock group The Beta Band made a quirky movie as his debut, and a Western at that, but that’s exactly what musician turned filmmaker John Maclean did. An old pal of Michael Fassbender (he directed him in the terrific short “Pitch Black Heist” a few years back) McClean’s “Slow West,” is a whimsical fairy tale-esque American West fable that puts a wry spin on a dark story of love, revenge and fate.  Read the full story at IndieWIRE/The Playlist.

Slow West (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is out now via Lakeshore Records!  The album features score by Jed Kurzel (The Babadook, Macbeth); hear the original track, “Slow West” exclusively at Stereogum.  The critically-acclaimed film is said to have reinvigorated the Western film genre.  Watch Slow West, available now On Demand (rent it on iTunes).  See below for more on the album.

John Maclean and Jed Kurzel’s Collaboration Makes The Old West New Again

The new Western starring Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee as a pair of unlikely companions traveling out West in each other’s company.   FIRST and foremost, this is a terrific Western and a fantastic feature film.   –Ain’t It Cool

If there’s one thing you will learn about composer Jed Kurzel, whose latest score on Slow West — which just about makes anybody fall in love with the western genre all over again —  is that you don’t want to put him in a box.  As a musician-turned-composer, his next role will be that of a director in Ivan Lendl Never Learnt To Volley, with brother Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) producing!  The comedy is based on the brothers’ own childhood as state-level tennis players.  Director John Maclean, a musician-turned director (formerly of The Beta Band), collaborated with Kurzel to produce the “stripped down, and lyrical score.”  Check out the score available now on Slow West (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) via Lakeshore Records.  Slow West is now playing in theaters and on VOD (rent it on iTunes)!  View film stills and get a taste of the “Old West” from the audio preview below.
