Before Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman played mutants in X-Men: Days of Future Past, they played ordinary citizens in extraordinary situations. Halle Berry stars as Jordan Turner in The Call, about a 911 operator who goes beyond the call to save a girl (Perfect Sisters‘ Abigail Breslin) who is abducted by a serial killer. Hugh Jackman plays Boyd Bolton, a used car salesman in Butter, a satire centered around the power struggle behind an annual butter carving competition in Iowa. The soundtracks for these two movie selections are solid picks: the Butter soundtrack is scored by Grammy-winning Composer Mateo Messina (Juno), and The Call soundtrack is scored by Academy Award-nominated Composer John Debney (Walk of Shame, Draft Day).

The week can often fly by faster than you can say #ThrowbackThursday, so we’ve rounded up some good reads from last week for your convenience. Don’t forget to subscribe to this blog (FilmMusicDaily.com) to get all the latest news on film music, movies, composers and music artists.
A respectable small-town pharmacist (played by Sam Rockwell) delivers a prescription to a lonely trophy wife (played by Olivia Wilde). She takes him on a walk on the wild side, which includes extra-large martinis, uninhibited bedroom behavior and the illicit pleasures of the pharmacopeia he has access to in his store. Composers Andrew Feltenstein and John Nau (“Anchorman 2”; “Casa De Mi Padre”) load the soundtrack with whimsical, colorful, and jazzy tunes; not unlike what one might experience under the influence in this murderously dark comedy.
Better Living Through Chemistry also stars Michelle Monaghan (“Source Code“), Ray Liotta, Jane Fonda, as well as Ben Schwartz, Norbert Leo Butz and Ken Howard.
