Austin-based composer and bandleader Graham Reynolds—celebrated for wide-ranging credits that include film scores for Richard Linklater and collaborations with Jack Black and DJ Spooky — leads a rousing experimental chamber opera that pays tribute to a revolutionary and legendary figure. Pancho Villa From a Safe Distance explores the life and legacy of Pancho Villa, and sonically traverses both Mexican and American perspectives to reveal intersections and conflicts to create a borderless dialogue about the shared histories of Mexico and the United States. Featuring hybrid compositional and production techniques and an extensive sound palette, Pancho Villa is a rousing transnational collaboration that brings together Mexico City theater collective Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol as librettists, director Shawn Sides of Rude Mechs, Kronos Quartet lighting designer Brian Scott, Austin Lyric Opera tenor Paul Sanchez, mezzo-soprano Liz Cass, Grammy Award® winning guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada, and backed by a stellar chamber ensemble with remixes by famed Monterrey DJ Toy Selectah.

Director Richard Linklater‘s latest film, Everybody Wants Some is now playing in theaters. Among the first and most successful talents to emerge during the American independent film renaissance of the 1990s (AllMovie), Richard is also known for his recent Academy Award®-nominated film, Boyhood, and classics, Bernie (score by Graham Reynolds) and A Scanner Darkly (score by Graham Reynolds) — both classic soundtracks released on Lakeshore Records!.
Spend the weekend watching Richard Linklater films: watch A Scanner Darkly (rent it on iTunes) and Bernie (rent it on iTunes)!
If the names Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck and Wes Bentley sound familiar, it’s not only because they star in Interstellar, the new scifi spectacular directed by Christopher Nolan (check show times). Check out some other great films featuring these actors and their accompanying soundtracks released by Lakeshore Records. We’ve created a handy list for you as reference for those weekend binge watching sessions, whether in theaters or on VOD. Which ones will you watch?
We love newly-minted Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, and two of our favorite independent movies of his are now available on Netflix Instant Streaming! Mud was one of the most acclaimed movies of 2013 and received a stellar 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a story about two Mississippi teens who meet a mysterious drifter named Mud hiding on a deserted river island and they get mixed up in his tangled web. It also features Reese Witherspoon and is brand new to Netflix Streaming!
In the 2011 black comedy Bernie, Jack Black “plays the affable Texas mortician Bernie who befriends the small town’s wealthiest widow and then kills her. But despite the suspicious nature of her death, no one wants to think anything but the best of Bernie.” Richard Linklater’s Bernie got “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% score, and we think you’ll love it, especially Matthew McConaughey’s turn as the local DA Danny “Buck” Davidson.
