Says Burbrook De Vere: The work of scoring the show, and beginning to understand its three central characters, would weirdly involve some thinking about how each of them would hear and interpret moments of on-screen music differently, with their own individual sets of baggage and vulnerabilities. Throughout the project it felt as if the music being used in Wolf Like Me could not exist separately from the score.”
ABOUT PIERS BURBROOK DE VERE
Piers Burbrook de Vere is an artist and composer based in the Blue Mountains, Australia.
A product of the early 90s Western Australian bush setting he grew up in, Piers was resolved to seek out a violin teacher after seeing The Bushwacker Band perform what must have been an inspiring set at the Fremantle Arts Centre. That same year, aged four-and-a-half, he shifted focus from bluegrass to an intensive classical training in the Suzuki method. Thirteen years later he drove east and became a student of Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
The son of a polyglot nomad born of the greatest generation and a music teacher of the flower power era, Piers cites his family’s love of storytelling – from his father’s migrations between Cairo, the Middle East, British Borneo and India, to his mother’s upbringing as a rector’s daughter within the conservative Church of England – and the accompanying soundtrack of eclectic instruments and records that filled the house, as being the most significant of his musical influences.
Piers successfully debuted into film composition in 2016 with Abe Forsythe’s dark satire Down Under, a confronting conversation about the Cronulla race riots that shook Sydney’s beaches in the early 2000s. That collaboration was followed by the 2019 Sundance hit Little Monsters for which Piers became an APRA award recipient.
Piers has written original scores for two acclaimed documentaries: Jen Peedom’s River, a tone poem narrated by Willem Dafoe that examines the fragile arteries of our planet; and Gracie Otto’s Under The Volcano, which tells the story of Beatles producer George Martin and his recording studio that stood in the shadow of an active volcano.
Beyond the studio, Piers is an accomplished musician, and in 2019 he performed using software and electronics at London’s Barbican Hall, with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, under the Artistic Direction of Richard Tognetti
