Micky Adams (Grammer), an eccentric has-been rock musician, loses his grip on reality as his record label looks to drop him and his new “unique” albums. In hopes of breaking out of the mailroom, young Charlie Porter (Jackson White) is tasked with traveling to the musician’s bizarre home and forcing Micky out of his contract. Micky realizes Charlie could be the key to an artistic breakthrough and the pair’s unlikely friendship grows. The odd but powerful bond helps both gain perspective on the music industry, life, love…and the space between.

Says Winter: “For me, getting the music right in THE SPACE BETWEEN was beyond critical. This was my first film as a director, the film is about music and music itself is a character in the movie, and we needed to sell the music of Micky Adams as real, like totally believable as a famous singer-songwriter. (My fantasy was that folks would Google Micky Adams kn their way out of a theater to see if he was a real guy.) So the stakes were really high!

Luckily, I knew enough to hire the brilliant music supervisor, Tricia Halloran to be my partner in crime and she made all seem possible!

I didn’t know Rivers Cuomo before this experience but his ability to interpret what I was looking for with just snippets of lyrics I had put into the script in my director’s pass, was astounding. It was so important to give it the energy of the 90’s. “Come With Me,” for example, is a fantastic song and accomplished all the goals, which is to say, it’s timeless while being perfectly rooted in the musical language of the 90’s in our film. I am still pinching myself after this experience.”

Says Music Supervisor Tricia Halloran: “At every stage of this project, we dreamed big and our dreams came true. We wondered, ‘What if we could get someone like Rivers Cuomo to write 70’s style songs?’ And then we got Rivers, who was phenomenal to work with. I will never forget the thrill of hearing his demos for ‘I See Colors’ and ‘J Is For Joy’ for the first time. He just ‘got it’ for every single one of our extremely specific, scripted song requests. Then we dreamed of producing the songs vintage-style, and we got to work at New Monkey (Elliott Smith’s old studio) with a rare vintage Trident board, vintage equipment and stellar producer Nick Luca. Then Rachel and I found out we both had crushes on the same LA band, Minibar, so we made them the house band for all the recordings, plus snuck a couple of their songs into the movie. It was like being on an extraordinary road trip where each stage somehow got more exhilarating than the last!”
