I'm Your Woman Soundtrack - Aska Matsumiya

Lakeshore Records has released I’m Your Woman—Amazon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring striking music by Aska Matsumiya (“Betty”, After Yang, “Selah and the Spades”). The main theme founded on a minimal, yet melodic piano anchoring the score transforms unexpectedly into a much darker work, as synths and strings are added, providing a tension-filled backdrop to the modern noir thriller.  See the album tracklist and purchase link below.

The Amazon Original directed by Julia Hart and starring Rachel Brosnahan, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Arinzé Kene, with Frankie Faison and Bill Heck is now streaming on Prime Video.

“Aska Matsumiya’s subtle piano score oscillates between ominous and searching (with echoes of David Shire’s ‘The Conversation’ compositions), pointing toward an enigma that requires the story’s full arc to settle in.” – IndieWire

Says Matsumiya: “I wanted the score to be both feminine and masculine yet somehow more intense than people might expect. The piano represents the main character and to enhance the intensity around what she is going through to transform, I added synths and strings and really slowed things down. I feel that women composers do not get enough credit for being able to create fierce and incredibly dark themes—as if that is not part of their musical palette.”

Suburban housewife Jean (Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) lives a seemingly easy life, supported by husband Eddie’s (Bill Heck) career as a thief. But when Eddie betrays his partners, Jean and her baby are forced to go on the run, and Eddie’s old friend Cal (Arinzé Kene) is tasked with keeping them safe. After Cal mysteriously disappears, Jean befriends his wife Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake) and the two women set out on a perilous journey into the heart of Eddie’s criminal underworld. A decidedly female take on crime dramas of the 1970s, I’m Your Woman is a tale of love, betrayal, motherhood — and what it takes to claim your life as your own.

Says Matsumiya: Everything came together very magically for this project. After reading the script and as I was speaking with Julia, melody immediately came to me. I paused our phone conversation to record a voice memo of the melody which later became the main theme for the film. Just hearing this was all it took for her to bring me on board.

I wanted the score to be both feminine and masculine yet somehow more intense than people might expect. The piano represents the main character and to enhance the intensity around what she is going through to transform, I added synths and strings and really slowed things down. I feel that women composers do not get enough credit for being able to create fierce and incredibly dark themes—as if that is not part of their musical palette.”
