Communication Arts 2017 Illustration Competition Shortlists Lakeshore/Invada Album Artwork

Congratulations to Illustrators Emma Bergin and Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, and to Lakeshore’s Art Director John Bergin for being selected to the Communication Arts 2017 Illustration Competition Shortlist for their album artwork on Lakeshore Records’ co-release (with Invada Records UK) of the Captain Fantastic and Mr. Robot soundtracks, respectively.  Nearly 4,000 submissions this year have been shortlisted to 1,258 this week.

“I love the simplicity of Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir’s Captain Fantastic illustration,” says Lakeshore’s Art Director John Bergin. “The weathered, missing face is a sublimely economic way of depicting sorrow – a feeling of missing or being lost. Perfect for the film and for Alex Somers’ score. We printed this artwork reverse-card; meaning it’s printed on the wrong side of the paper stock. This creates a unique soft matte finish. We also made custom dies, rounding the corners. Our goal was to make the Captain Fantastic score literally the softest album ever made.”

Emma Bergin’s 8-bit Mr. Robot poster features characters from the acclaimed television series. “The thing I love about this piece,” continues John, “is how the personality of each character has been so wonderfully captured. That’s why I selected Emma to create this image. She has an amazing talent for giving characters life. Each of these 8-bit characters wear their story. If you look closely at the details, you’ll see playfulness, darkness, and beauty – all rendered with just a few squares. I particularly love how Flipper is facing Sheila as though he wants to be petted and how Qwerty, the beta fish, is humorously rendered with only three squares.”
