James Newton Howard: A Rare Interview On Scoring ‘Nightcrawler’ | The New York Times

Having written the scores for more than 100 features, and almost always several in a year, James Newton Howard may be one of the hardest working composers in the business. From blockbusters (“The Hunger Games”) to indies (“Parkland”), Mr. Howard is always looking for a fresh challenge. He got one with Dan Gilroy’s feature “Nightcrawler,” starring  Jake Gyllenhaal as an obsessive freelance news videographer  who will do most anything to obtain footage of crime scenes and accidents.

In the latest interview with the New York Times, eight-time Academy Award nominee James Newton Howard explained the intent of his score for Nightcrawler, and how it played an integral role in the advancement of the main character, Lou Bloom, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.  So, rather than only scoring the film, he got inside the mind of the sociopath to score the lead character.  Read the full interview at New York Times.

The score is crucial to let us be nonjudgmental. -Director Dan Gilroy. Read the full story at Huffington Post.

“Score by James Newton Howard that recalls the hypnotic melodies he composed for Michael Mann’s Collateral – another City of Angels noir set during the wee hours of the night, and for which this film feels like a distant, crazy cousin: one whose weapon of choice is the camera itself.”
