Mandy Review: Johann Johannsson-Scored Horror Film Opens In UK Cinemas October 12! | Empire Online

How to describe Mandy? Imagine a live-action version of the cover art from a band that sang about dragons, Vikings and both Sodom and Gomorrah, set to a score from the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, that’s half the hardest basslines you’ll find outside a Berlin basement club and half atmospherics that would give Beelzebub himself the willies. – Andrew Lowry, Empire Online

SAND SPOKEN INTRO

In the beginning
There was me
I was alone
And it was dark
And in that darkness
A sound
Your voice
You called
You were alone
But I heard you

Every seed that gives us life
Every man must take a wife
Only one sun ever shines
Only one sun
Yours and mine

Jeremiah Sand was a righteous man
Who’s heart was full of love
He wandered the land
On the shifting sands
Searching for a Dove

These children cry
For what they lack
But a child can learn a lot
And a child is taught the lessons well
The light that shines through everything
The light is truth and the lesson’s learned
This song of you and me

Every seed that gives us life
Every man must take a wife
Only one sun
Ever shines
Only one sun
Yours and mine

Jeremiah Sand was a righteous man
Who’s heart was full of love
He wandered the land
On the shifting sands
Searching for a Dove

I saw you lost and wandering
Adrift upon the seas
Your head is far beneath the waves
But your heart should be so free
Listen you must tune your ear
To celestial frequencies
It’s in the air
The sound of love
Vibrations of the truth are here
The truth of you and me

Every seed that gives us life
Every man must take a wife
Only one sun
Ever shines
Only one sun
Yours and mine

Jeremiah Sand was a righteous man
Who’s heart was full of love
He wandered the land
On the shifting sands
Searching for a Dove

The rushing fools in plastic homes
These busy little bees
Running, busy back and forth
They never ever see
Their masters hand in every thing
The order of the trees
The song that’s whistling on the breeze
This song of you and me

Partly electronic, partly live players, it’s also heavily edited and processed for a dark, massive, industrial-metal sound that matches the grim, violent, sometimes insane milieu of the film. – Jon Burlingame, Variety

On the eve of the Mandy theatrical and soundtrack release, Variety’s Jon Burlingame takes a look at the late composer Johann Johannsson, whose score was completed shortly before his passing earlier this year.  The film’s director Panos Cosmatos, his friend and manager Tim Husom and others remark on the journey and collaborations that brought the highly-anticipated score to fruition, including the newly-formed Johann Johannsson Foundation, which aims to “connect and support music students to musicians.”  Read the full story at Variety.
