As evidenced in the recent weekend box office figures (there are indeed a handful of theaters still open across the country), not even a pandemic has prevented film fans from watching Swallow, the latest IFC Films release that is getting lots of buzz for not only its subject matter and direction (helmed by Carlo Mirabella-Davis), but also the score by Nathan Halpern! Featured in the No. 2 spot on IndieWire’s “20 Best Movies Eligible For The 2021 Oscars” list, Swallow is in good company with their shortlist of films which have or had plans to make a theatrical run. The score would dial into these more stylized cinematic and sonic aesthetics of Hollywood genre filmmaking of the studio era, while at the same time making sure that the emotions and sonic style was grounded in the inner life of a nuanced, character study. – IndieWire
EMMY®-nominated Composer Nathan Halpern (Minding The Gap, One Child Nation, One & Two) shares his IndieWire Essay (via Yahoo! Entertainment) about his collaboration with Swallow Director Carlo Mirabella-Davis (Knife Point, The Swell Season), the body-horror-meets-psychological-thriller now on VOD (get it here). Halpern provides a written visualization of how his score dials in the film’s visual aesthetics and old Hollywood callbacks. Lakeshore Records released his score, Swallow — Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, digitally on March 27, and you can listen to the album below.
It’s the setup for a portrait of a breakdown, for an installment of that venerable, sadism-inflected mini-genre that is the portrait of a woman coming undone, often in isolation. – Vulture

My emotions trust this sound and are attracted by the chimes and subtle inflexions of a score like “One and two”. I don’t miss noise and explosive cues; I don’t miss action pieces. I like it here, immersed in this musical mist that makes me feel like I am somewhere out of time…” –Soundtrack Dreams“Thanks to the warm and smooth cinematography of Autumn Durald and the haunting music of Nathan Halpern, “One & Two” is able to establish the proper tone and feel needed to carry a daring and fantastical film like this one.” –Examiner.com
