Slow West: John Maclean’s Acclaimed Western Opens In UK Cinemas, Soundtrack Out Now!

The Mess Hall Band’s Jed Kurzel Scores The Sounds Of The Old West In Sundance Film Festival Winning Buddy Western

John MacLean was once a member of the Beta Band, the great and influential and weirdly underrated Scottish group. He directed some of their videos, and after the group’s breakup, he became a filmmaker. His first movie is Slow West, the new indie Western with Michael Fassbender. The composer Jed Kurzel did most of the Slow West score, but MacLean got one contribution from a band who almost certainly carries some Beta Band influence, the London art-poppers Django Django. Their song “Slow West” is a driving acoustic-guitar instrumental… –Stereogum

John Maclean’s Buddy Western Is Now On VOD, Own The Soundtrack Feat. Score By The Mess Hall’s Jed Kurzel

Perhaps it’s no huge surprise that one of the founding members of offbeat rock group The Beta Band made a quirky movie as his debut, and a Western at that, but that’s exactly what musician turned filmmaker John Maclean did. An old pal of Michael Fassbender (he directed him in the terrific short “Pitch Black Heist” a few years back) McClean’s “Slow West,” is a whimsical fairy tale-esque American West fable that puts a wry spin on a dark story of love, revenge and fate.  Read the full story at IndieWIRE/The Playlist.

Slow West: Composer Jed Kurzel Scores A New Role, Film Now On VOD

John Maclean and Jed Kurzel’s Collaboration Makes The Old West New Again

The new Western starring Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee as a pair of unlikely companions traveling out West in each other’s company.   FIRST and foremost, this is a terrific Western and a fantastic feature film.   –Ain’t It Cool

If there’s one thing you will learn about composer Jed Kurzel, whose latest score on Slow West — which just about makes anybody fall in love with the western genre all over again —  is that you don’t want to put him in a box.  As a musician-turned-composer, his next role will be that of a director in Ivan Lendl Never Learnt To Volley, with brother Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) producing!  The comedy is based on the brothers’ own childhood as state-level tennis players.  Director John Maclean, a musician-turned director (formerly of The Beta Band), collaborated with Kurzel to produce the “stripped down, and lyrical score.”  Check out the score available now on Slow West (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) via Lakeshore Records.  Slow West is now playing in theaters and on VOD (rent it on iTunes)!  View film stills and get a taste of the “Old West” from the audio preview below.

See Slow West This Weekend! Daniel Schweiger Interviews Composer Jed Kurzel For Film Music Mag

“Slow West” affirms Jed Kurzel’s unique, rising voice in the domain of indie cinema, a score whose unplugged, acoustic sound has its roots in the composer’s Aussie band The Mess Hall – their folk-rock rock stylings bringing comparisons to The White Stripes. Making his scoring debut for brother Justin’s true-like serial killer film “The Snowtown Murders,” Kurzel’s evocative work has often graced shattered family ties, from the nerve-jangling music of a mother and son terrorized by “The Babadook” to the mesmerizing minimalism of a young thug trying to impress a seasoned criminal in “Son of A Gun” and the exhilaration and downfall of Australian skateboard brothers in the documentary “All this Mayhem” Now giving us his most stripped down, and lyrical score for “Slow West,” Kurzel brings a distinctive, Australian wryness to a universal genre while providing yet another unclassifiable, ear-catching score.  -Daniel Schweiger, Film Music Magazine

Directed by John Maclean, Slow West is now playing in theaters and on VOD.  See below for more film and soundtrack details.
