‘White Bird In A Blizzard’ Claims A Spot In ‘Best Soundtrack Moments Of October’ Roundup | Stereogum

Stereogum has named director Gregg Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard in its roundup of Best Soundtrack Moments of October, planted firmly in the #2 slot.

Well, this is another one of those ’80s-set shoe-ins where there’s just no way I was going to be able to help myself. The score to White Bird In A Blizzard was handled by Robin Guthrie, the guitarist of Cocteau Twins, AKA the man responsible for some of the most ethereal and beautiful guitar work out there. The opening credits are set to Cocteau Twins’ “Sea, Swallow Me,” and through the various dream sequences and flashbacks, there’s always Guthrie’s guitar, reliably doing what it’s always been so effective at: putting all those strange and ineffable elements of human experience and memory into an actual sound. -Read the full story at Stereogum.

Starring Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Shiloh Fernandez and Christopher Meloni, White Bird In A Blizzard takes place in the ’80s and early part of the ’90s, featuring a period-correct soundtrack.  Lakeshore Records released two soundtracks: White Bird In A Blizzard Music By Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd, and White Bird In A Blizzard – Songs From The Film, featuring popular hits from the ’80s and ’90s.  Preview the albums below!

Gary Numan On Scoring ‘From Inside’, Making Sound Loops & The Modern Electronic Music Scene | Digital Trends

Numan and Fenton expertly capture the film’s mood shifts with tracks like the rhythmically driven The Train, the dynamically expansive The Refinery, and the scratchy minimalism of The Empty House. –Mike Mettler. Read the full interview at Digital Trends.

In an interview with veteran music journalist Mike Mettler, Gary Numan digs into how scoring From Inside: Gary Numan Special Edition (a Lakeshore Records release) compares to normal song writing, how recording music has evolved with the available technology and what he thinks about being an electronic music pioneer.  From Inside: Gary Numan Special Edition is available now on DVD.  Don’t forget to enter the free DVD giveaway.

#44 Gamer
“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Sammy Davis Jr.
Gamer (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Set to the utterly appropriate sounds of Sammy Davis Jr.’s rendition of the Cole Porter standard “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” Castle and his minions boogie and bop like refuges from the creepiest Busby Berkeley film ever made, then break formation to test Kable in hand-to-hand combat. Hall dances like a puppet on strings, playing up the themes of control inherent not only in gaming, but also in fight and dance choreography.

#18 Buffalo ’66
“Heart Of The Sunrise” by Yes
Buffalo ’66 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Download The Album: iTunes (UK Only) | Buy CD

To the minor extent that Vincent Gallo’s directorial debut has a plot, it involves his character, Billy, seeking revenge on the Buffalo Bills placekicker whose missed field-goal attempt ostensibly ruined Billy’s life. Near the end of the film, Billy finally shows up at the strip club owned by the retired player, gun in hand. Rather than accompany this surreally staged, grotesquely violent scene with music that might actually be heard in a strip club, or even music that would conventionally heighten the intensity of a shootout, Gallo chooses—yes!—Yes. Not only does the track’s sinuous groove provide plenty of offbeat tension as Billy walks in, it thrillingly shifts into high gear at the precise moment that he spots his victim. Prog kill! —Mike D’Angelo
