In season two of “The Great,” Catherine finally takes the Russian throne for her own — but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of ‘liberating’ a country that doesn’t want to be. She’ll battle her court, her team, even her own mother (played by guest star Gillian Anderson) in a bid to bring the enlightenment to Russia. Meanwhile she’ll also battle her heart as Peter slowly transitions from much-hated husband, to prisoner? Ally? Lover? Ultimately Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming ‘Great’, will ask more of her than she could have imagined.

Says Barr: “In Season 2 of ‘The Great,’ I have had the great joy of continuing to score Tony McNamara’s brilliant and hilarious series. Driven by orchestra, synth, and a chorus of balalaikas, the score leans heavily into melody and theme with Russian undertones and the occasional contemporary pulse.”

“The Great” is created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Josh Kesselman and Ron West, and Matt Shakman. The series, which has been renewed for a third season, is produced by Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television.

The series has garnered notable awards recognition since its debut in 2020, including multiple Emmy, SAG Award, Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globe nominations. “The Great” has also been nominated for four Writers Guild Awards, with Tony McNamara winning for Episodic Comedy in 2021.

ABOUT NATHAN BARR
Emmy-winning composer Nathan Barr is known for his incredible range as a composer, deftly moving between many genres and styles, always incorporating unusual instruments and putting a focus on melody. This versatility for which he has become known is displayed most recently in the hit Amazon Studios/Alan Ball comedy-drama Uncle Frank, starring Paul Bettany; Amazon Studios/Legendary Televisions fantasy period drama Carnival Row, starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne; Hulu’s The Great, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult; and Ryan Murphys Netflix series Hollywood, for which Barr received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. Barrs upcoming projects include the Netflix original action film Kate, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson; second seasons of both The Great and Carnival Row; a second collaboration with Ryan Murphy for Netflix, Halston, starring Ewan McGregor; and Eli Roths upcoming Lionsgate action-adventure film, Borderlands, starring Cate Blanchett, Jack Black and Kevin Hart.

Barrs diverse roster includes some of televisions biggest shows. He has scored all six seasons of FXs The Americans, which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music; all seven seasons of HBOs mega-hit True Blood; Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, for which he earned his second Emmy nomination for the main title theme category; and more recently all three seasons of Amazons con-man drama Sneaky Pete, starring Giovanni Ribisi.

Barr has the distinction of being the first composer to have two Emmy nominations in the Main Title category in the same year. He has achieved this distinction twice with The Americans and Hemlock Grove in 2013, and Hollywood and Carnival Row in 2020.

Alongside his extensive career in television, Barr has a long record of scoring successful films as he approaches his 50th feature. A frequent collaborator of gore-horror master Eli Roth, Barr scored his early cult-classics Cabin Feverand Hostel and more recently The House With A Clock In Its Walls, starring Cate Blanchett and Jack Black. Some of his other feature scores include Jason Blums box office hit thriller The Boy Next Door, starring Jennifer Lopez, and Universal Picturescontroversial satire, The Hunt.

In addition to composing, Nathan is a multi-instrumentalist and regularly includes in his work instruments from his large collection such as a human bone trumpet from Tibet, a dismantled piano, a rare Glass Armonica, and gourd cellos, among others. The gem of his collection is a 3 manual, 19 rank Wurlitzer Theater Organ with 1,366 pipes. The organ lived on the scoring stage at 20th Century Fox from 1928-1997, and can be heard in dozens of scores by legendary composers such as Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, Jerry Goldsmith, and John Williams. It is now the centerpiece of Nathans recently-completed Bandrika Studios, a 9,000 sq ft scoring stage and recording facility conceived by Nathan as a permanent home for this history-rich instrument. Featured in Variety and The Wall Street Journal, Bandrika has already established itself as a world-class recording space and a part of Barrs increasingly unique vision.

Nathan Barr currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
