Though there are awards predictions and buzz around Ron Howard’s upcoming film, “Hillbilly Elegy,” that drama may not be his best film of 2020. You see, the filmmaker has already released “Rebuilding Paradise,” a heartwarming documentary about a town that unites to rebuild after a terrible tragedy. Lakeshore Records will release Rebuilding Paradise—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on November 6. The music is by award-winning composers Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, No Time To Die, Dune) and Lorne Balfe (Mission Impossible—Fallout, Black Widow). Their evocatively orchestrated score provides an emotive backdrop to the film, from Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard, which chronicles the destruction of the city of Paradise, California by devastating fires and the residents’ efforts to restore it.

Rebuilding Paradise, which has been hailed by critics as having “a special timeliness that resonates with the moment,” first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, had a virtual premiere on July 12 attended by more than 6,000 people, followed by a very successful virtual and physical theater release which launched July 31 and has since played in over 125 markets in the U.S.
On the morning of Nov. 8, 2018, a devastating firestorm engulfed the picturesque city of Paradise, California. By the time the Camp Fire was extinguished, it had killed 85 people, displaced 50,000 residents and destroyed 95% of local structures. It was the deadliest U.S. fire in 100 years — and the worst ever in California’s history.
As residents faced the damage to their lives, to their homes and to more than 150,000 acres in and around their 141-year-old town, they did something amazing: They worked together to heal. The community members went on to forge a bond stronger than what they had before the catastrophe, even as their hope and spirit were challenged by continued adversity: relocations, financial crises, government hurdles, water poisoning, grief and PTSD.
From the moment the crisis began, Oscar-winning director Ron Howard led a filmmaking team to the city and would go on to spend a year with Paradise residents, documenting their efforts to recover what was lost. The Camp Fire and its overwhelming aftermath became a de facto lesson in what we all must do: protect our environment, help our neighbors, plan for future dangers and remember to preserve the traditions that unite us — just as these resilient citizens did when they began the important task of Rebuilding Paradise.
Says Balfe: “Being able to work with Ron and Hans again is not only a privilege but an amazing learning experience. They are both amazing storytellers. This is a story that isn’t known and had to be told. It gave me faith in humanity and gave me the belief we can overcome our challenges in life.”
Says Zimmer: “It was heartbreaking to watch the destruction the Camp Fire brought on the city of Paradise, but I have been incredibly moved to see the resilience and hope that has come out of that heartbreak. I am inspired by the people of Paradise and it has been an honor to help tell their story in a small way alongside Ron and Lorne.”
Rebuilding Paradise will have its broadcast commercial-free premiere Sunday, Nov. 8 at 9/8c on National Geographic Channel. Proceeds from the sales of the album will be donated to the Paradise Rotary Foundation, Butte Strong Foundation, and Camp Fire Collaborative.
